From a glam girl to historical character -- Bollywood screen diva Aishwarya Rai has played a variety of roles. Now for "Action Replay" she will don the look of an old woman and director Vipul Shah says he hired a Hollywood make-up artist to get the right make up on her face.

If certain media reports are to be believed, Aishwarya threw tantrums about getting her make-up done by someone other than her own make-up man, but Shah says otherwise.

"Ash did her old age make up with Paul, a Hollywood make-up artist. When we did it the first time, it didn't work out well. When you are doing age make-up, you can't correct it so it had to be removed fully and done again, " said Shah in a statement.

The filmmaker, who has made movies like "Waqt - The Race Against Time" and "Singh Is Kinng", says the actress shot the scenes patiently.

"It took us six hours to get her look right. We started shooting at three in the morning and the shooting went on till 7 a.m., " he said.

"I was pleasantly surprised to get the news about my being chosen for the prestigious award. I am only 28 years old and it's really early in my career. I feel humbled and honoured to be chosen by the jury," said Shahid.

What do Aamir Khan and Imran Khan have in common apart from their bloodline? The younger Khan says that like his uncle he too is a perfectionist.

"Aamir is one of India's finest actors. Though he doesn't agree that he is a perfectionist, he just likes to work hard... it is a good thing. Even I like working hard, so I'm a lot like him professionally," Imran told IANS in an interview.

"I feel that if I am putting my name, face, energy, talent and time into something - it should turn out to be the best. If I'm associated with something - be it a film or an event, I like to do whatever I can to make it a success. At the end of the day, everyone should strive for perfection," he added.

At 26, Imran is quite a mature decision maker considering his criteria for choosing his films.

"I don't go by banners. I go by what interests me and appeals to me. At times it's the script itself. I chose 'Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na' for its simple, cute, romantic and comic feel. Then I chose 'Kidnap' for its action. Now I have done 'Luck' after which I'm doing a romantic comedy again to break the monotony. So whatever excites me, I do it," he said.

In "Luck", Imran has performed death-defying stunts and has starred opposite his childhood friend, Shruthi Haasan who is making her Bollywood debut with the movie. Releasing July 24, the action-thriller also stars Sanjay Dutt, Mithun Chakraborty and Ravi Kissen, apart from others.

It was Imran only who suggested Shruthi's name for the female lead to director Soham Shah.

"I've known Shruthi since we were 10 years old. We have grown up together and know each other way too well. Soham was very sure he wanted a new girl for 'Luck'. And since I had seen a lot of girls during the screen tests for 'Jaane Tu...', I told him -- 'Dude, you're going to have a tough time finding one.'

"He also wanted someone who could do her own stunts. I just thought of Shruthi not knowing if she wanted to act or not. But then she came down to Mumbai and it worked," he narrated.

According to Imran, Shruthi is "quite serious about her work".

"Shruthi used to enter the sets with a serious look on her face. She is very serious about her work. But so am I. At times it was hard to act opposite her because she knows me inside out," he said.

After "Luck", Imran will be seen in "Delhi Belly" and "Seven Days in Paris". He has also signed up for Dharma Productions' "I Don't Believe In Love Stories", in which he will share screen space with Sonam Kapoor.

She isn't impressed with the big banner logic.

When it comes to working with the Khans, she is more subdued.

While Salman Khan helped Govinda out with all the much needed love advice in Partner, Chi Chi is doing the very opposite in this film. He plays a divorce lawyer in the film, who doesn't believe in the institution of marriage. The movie also stars Tusshar Kapoor, Prachi Desai, Fardeen Khan and Genelia D'Souza.

Produced by Abbas-Mustan, the film is a fun entertainer, which has Govinda, Fardeen Khan and Tusshar Kapoor playing thick friends but the trio have distinct views about the institution of marriage. While Tusshar plays someone who is a believer in arranged marriage, Fardeen’s character is far more flamboyant. For him, being in love matters most and all he wants is a love marriage. As for Govinda he plays a pivotal fun character in the film who is a Casanova of sorts and doesn’t believe in marriage at all.

“What you would see in Life Partner is something that happens to every husband and wife. My character is very conservative and traditional and believes in arranged marriage. It is about how he gets married and deals with married life. All the ups and downs in his life and relationships have been presented in an entertaining way,” Tusshar told StarBoxOffice.

In the film, Tusshar Kapoor plays a Gujarati based in South Africa while Prachi Desai plays his Gujarati wife who originally comes from India. Genelia D’Souza is paired opposite Fardeen Khan while there is a surprise element around the name being paired opposite Govinda.

“On the personal front, Katrina will not marry Salman and if she does, then it will not last long. They both are completely different people. Salman is a Number 9 (27th Dec.1965) ruled by Mars (No.9), No.8 (Saturn – Capricorn) and No.6 (Venus).

They share Number 9 in common but nothing else. Nos.7 and 9 do not gel well with difference of opinion being the main negative aspect. They both are different people with no similar ideologies but can be friends for sure.

Kirron Kher's mother Diljit Thakar Singh passed away in Chandigarh recently. She was 84.

"She died of a cardiac arrest.The last time I spoke to her in Chandigarh was on June 18 when it was her birthday," sighs Kirron.

The daughter wishes that she'd been with her mother in her last moments, "But no regrets. My mother wouldn't have liked it. She was a vibrant woman of many talents. She was a painter. My brother, who passed away suddenly five years ago, inherited her talent for painting. My younger sister Kanwal inherited my mother's dexterity at the game of badminton. And I got my mother's flair for dramatics." If Kirron wanted she could have been a badminton champ. "But that mantle was passed to my sister. My mom and sis played badminton together at state - level tournament when my sister was 11."

The actress recalls, "My mother was excellent at everything she did. She was a perfectionist. And not one of those parents who think their children is the best. Besides many other things Diljit also a connoisseur of Urdu poetry and cinema. "And I'm not talking about just Indian cinema. She was interested in world cinema. She ordered journals on world cinema at home in Chandigarh. And she didn't miss a single film. We had an ayah who looked after us. Every weekend my mother and ayah would go for every film."

Diljit apparently played a part in a recent film Mummyji. "It wasn't really a part," laughs Kirron. "The director Pammi Somal wanted my parents to walk through a shot. And they did... there was no acting involved."

Concludes the wistful beti, "My mother was with me when my son Sikandar was born. She was the first one after me to hold my son. She was always at the forefront of anything she did. A friend of mine said she must be as spirited in after life as she was in this life. I don't doubt that."

Rani Mukerji makes Sallu patch-up with Adi

Salman Khan might soon sign his first Yash Raj movie. According to sources close to the production house, the actor is considering a lead part in a YRF film to be directed by Tashan director Vijay Krishna Acharya.

If all goes well, this will be Sallu's first film with Yash Raj. He has been part of the film industry since 1988 (Biwi Ho Toh Aisi) but he has never worked with the Chopra banner.

Kept in waiting
Salman had been approached by Aditya Chopra for Chak De! India. It is believed that the actor quoted a ridiculously high price and kept him waiting for 21 days. On the 22nd day, without waiting for his reply, or intimidating him, Adi signed Shah Rukh Khan for the same role. This created tension between the actor and the production house, and he swore never to work with them again. He had also refused Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, when he was approached for it. If Salman has now agreed to work for a YRF project, it is only because of the efforts of his good friend, and Adi's girlfriend Rani Mukerji.

Says a source, "Rani was instrumental in getting Salman to patch up with the banner. When she was on Salman's 10 Ka Dum in the last season, she had a long chat with Sallu and told him that Adi was keen on working with him. She convinced Salman to bury the hatchet." Kambakkht Ishq has hit the bull's eye at the box office by grossing Rs 100 crore in the first week despite unfavourable reviews - and Akshay Kumar is having the last laugh. But he insists that he has no inclination of being the 'king' of Bollywood and is content playing a 'clown' for his audiences.

"Really, ever since the time it became loud and clear that Kambakkht Ishq had succeeded amongst the audiences, I'm being asked if I'm marching towards the top again. My reply to them is that I'm happy living and dying being where I am and that's anywhere but on top," Akshay said in an interview.

"See, I'm a clown and not a king. Once a clown, always a clown! I belong in the ring, not on the podium," said Akshay, who was deeply hurt that many of his contemporaries from the industry have been apparently trying to pull him down.

Before Kambakkht Ishq, the 41-year-old saw a twin setback in the form of Chandni Chowk To China and 8X10 Tasveer. It was just apt that he announced his presence in a big way with the action-romance flick.

Eros International, the distributors of Kambakkht Ishq, declared that the film had grossed about Rs 100 crores worldwide in the first week, making it one of the most successful openings in Indian cinema.

The film has grossed Rs 70 crores in India and Rs 21 crores overseas. And the music and digital rights of the movie have fetched Rs 10 crores - No wonder Akshay comes down on the critics who had a field day ripping apart the film.

"Well, critics to us are like how the tax man is to everyone. We all wish they didn't exist, but they do. It's up to the people if they want someone else to make decisions for them," he said in a matter-of-fact tone.

Talking about the naysayers, he said, "I know they definitely had a whale of a time with this one, didn't they? What to do? I can't force them to be nice to me and I'm not the type to put a gun to anyone's head; so let them be.

"I have faith that my audience will come and prove my work's worth. And this time they surely have and I love them for it."

Has he himself never been influenced by critics for films that feature someone else?

"Honestly speaking for myself, if I want to see a movie I will, even if all my friends say it's crap. In fact, it will only make me want to see it even more. We all don't like sugar in our tea; so why would we all like the same movies? it's simple. Trust your own judgement and not someone else's. That's all I can say," he said.

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan is on bed rest following a stomach ache, but he is more concerned about the health of his politician friend Amar Singh, thespian Dilip Kumar and Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray and keeping himself updated on them.

The megastar went to Lilavati Hospital Wednesday morning after a stomach ache complaint.

I was to travel to Singapore today (Thursday) to be with my dearest friend and family member, Amar Singh ji who undergoes a surgery for a kidney transplant. In this hour of trial, I needed to be with him but the doctors advise a few days of rest and observation for me, he posted on his blog www.bigb.bigadda.com.

Jaya (wife) and Abhishek (son) and Aishwarya (daughter-in-law) are there already and I shall join them soon, health permitting, added Big B who is resting at his residence Prateeksha in Mumbai.

The 67-year-old further expressed concern for Dilip Kumar, who was recently down with malaria and admitted to Lilavati Hospital. He is also worried about Bal Thackeray, who has undergone an angioplasty.

My idol and, I am certain, the idol of millions, respected Dilip Kumar has been unwell and in hospital. I had been in constant touch with (his wife) Saira ji when I was out of the country. I’m now happy to read that he is back home. May he enjoy good health ever, he wrote.

Bala Saheb Thakeray has also been rather unwell and within a short span of time has been in hospital almost every other month. On all those occasions, I have been out of the country and unable to express my concern to him personally. I have been speaking to his son Udhav and he informs me today after I called that Bala Saheb is showing signs of improvement. I wish him good health, he further wrote.

The megastar also recalled Thackeray’s gesture during his 1982 accident.

I shall never forget his concern for my health when I was down in 1982 in the Breach Candy Hospital after the ‘Coolie’ incident. Being a great cartoonist, apart from his political presence in Maharashtra and India, he had most interestingly done a painting which depicted that even though Yamraj (the God of death) had come to visit me, I had been able to fight him off successfully.

“I am not a cartoonist, nor a painter, but I wish similar sentiment to him. May he ever fight off the evil of Yamraj, he explained.

The actor, who was last seen in dud Delhi-6, also wrote that he is still unwell and hasn’t recovered from the stomach ache.

Post ‘New York’ Kabir Khan busy babysitting

Bollywood filmmaker Kabir Khan, who is currently basking in the success of his recently released film “New York”, is busy taking care of his kids while his wife, popular host Mini Mathur, is shooting for a new TV show in Malaysia.

Mini is shooting in the jungles of Malaysia for Sony TV’s soon-to-begin adventure reality show “Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao”. And Khan is taking care of their five-year-old son and less than a-year-old daughter.

“The jungle is not for kids and now that the film has released and received a fabulous response, Kabir has promised he will take care of the kids and will be shuttling over the weekends to catch up with me. I will definitely go crazy here after two months,” Mini said in a press release.

The Indian version of the British adventure show “I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!” will go on air July 13. In the show, celebrities will be left in a jungle with the bare essentials needed to survive under adverse conditions.

Bollywood’s popular couple - Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai - has been approached by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to create awareness about the plight of lovebirds through a special photo shoot.

“As India’s most famous ‘lovebirds’, we believe that you are uniquely suited to help bring attention to the plight of these smart and sensitive birds. We would like to arrange a photo shoot with you for a ‘Love Birds in Cages’ ad to raise awareness about the issue,” Anuradha Sawhney, PETA India chief functionary, wrote in a letter to Abhishek and Aishwarya .

Lovebirds are small members of the parrot family and the most commonly sold birds for domestic as well as display caging, which is a punishable offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species restricts trading in foreign birds.

However, a black market involving 300 of the India’s estimated 1,200 species of birds thrives openly in many places.

When ‘My Name Is Khan’ left Karan Johar stressed out

After making candy floss romances, Karan Johar is dealing with serious issues in his “My Name Is Khan”, which brings Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol together on screen after a long time. Though he is excited about presenting a different side of Shah Rukh, making the film did turn unpleasant when actor Aamir Bashir was denied a visa to the US.

Karan’s latest directorial venture is “diametrically opposite” to his earlier films.

“You know, on the very first day of shooting my cameraman Ravi Chandran looked at me and said, ‘I don’t think you’ve ever shot something like this’. Shah Rukh plays a completely different human being … I’ve never directed that person before,” Karan Johar told IANS in an interview.

But he had his share of problems too.

“Yes, there were problems. We had certain legal issues. We had to make some changes to accommodate the developments. They were sorted out. I believe in completely going by the law of every land. That’s what we did in LA (Los Angeles) when troubles arose,” said Karan, who replaced Aamir with Jimmy Sheirgil in the movie.

Were you upset with Aamir for going to the press about the visa problem?

“I don’t see why the issue had to be reported so prominently in the Indian media. It complicated things for me. If creating hurdles for a filmmaker on a difficult foreign location makes news, so be it. It constantly kept creating stress for me,” he added.

Excerpts from the interview:

Q: You could make a film on the things that happened during your Los Angeles schedule of “My Name Is Khan”.

A: Besides normal problems, there were unforeseen problems. Thank god for my fabulous technical team. Without them I could never make my film the way I want to. Yes, there was stress.

Q: There were visa problems for some Muslim members of your cast?

A: Yes, there were problems. We had certain legal issues. We had to make some changes to accommodate the developments. They were sorted out. I believe in completely going by the law of every land. That’s what we did in LA when troubles arose.

Q: Was Aamir replaced by Jimmy Sheirgil after a great deal of deliberation?

A: Yes, we did have to do some serious re-thinking. I spoke to my casting director Shanu Sharma for immediate release. I was very happy to have Jimmy Sheirgil on board. I had done his clothes for Aditya Chopra’s “Mohabbatein”. So I know him from his debut. It was unfortunate that things didn’t work out with Aamir Bashir. Like Jimmy, he was terrific in “A Wednesday”. I look forward to working with him some other time.

This time I’m being creative in a different ways. And Shah Rukh plays a completely different human being … I’ve never directed that person before. It took a few days for all of us to get into the groove. How this exploration of a new territory will turn out, no one knows.

What Neeraj vohra has to say about SHORTCUT?

“Short Kut - The Con Is On” is a fun-filled “hare and tortoise story” that has Akshaye Khanna and Arshad Warsi playing a “lethal combination”, says writer-director Neeraj Vora, who adds that it has no semblance to his last film “Phir Hera Pheri”.

“‘Short Kut’ is about a struggling writer-director (played by) Akshaye who believes in the hard way of living and his actor-dancer friend (Arshad) believes in taking shortcuts to success. In the film, Arshad steals Akshaye’s script and becomes an overnight star,” Vora told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

“But ‘Short Kut…’ is not a ‘Phir Hera Pheri’. This film tells you that shortcuts don’t pay, they don’t last and they don’t satisfy. It’s a very serious film, but with a lot of humour and drama. It’s like a hare and tortoise story with Akshaye and Arshad in a terrific lethal combination,” he said.

Talking about the comic element in the movie, Vora said: “As far as comedy is concerned, it is physically an action and reaction story. Akshaye is in a serious part and he is not supposed to be comical at all. While Arshad has to deliver humour punches and Akshaye has to react.”

Vora entered showbiz as an actor with 1984 movie “Holi” and later debuted as a writer in 1995 with Aamir Khan-starrer “Rangeela”. In 2000, he donned the director’s cap for “Khiladi 420″, which had Akshay Kumar as hero. He then made “Phir Hera Pheri” in 2006.

As a writer, Vora has mostly been associated with comedies like “Bhool Bhulaiyaa” (2007), “Hulchul” (2004), “Yeh Teraa Ghar Yeh Meraa Ghar” (2001) and “Hera Pheri” (2000).

He admits comedy is his forte. “Comedy comes naturally to me. I derived it from my father. The main success point of my career was comedy because I used the personal aspect of a character and not SMS or Internet jokes like others.”

After juggling different roles Vora, a self-proclaimed “strict” and “clinical” director, wants to concentrate on direction now. His future projects include “Run Bhola Run” and “Family”.

“I’m 100 percent in the director’s chair now and I’d also love to produce a film because it will give me more creative control on the project. The clarity that I’ve had in direction is the most among all my endeavours,” said Vora, whose “Short Kut” is being produced by Anil Kapoor.

“Anil Kapoor is a very large-hearted producer…he is in love with cinema and every intricate detail associated with it. He is one producer who gives full freedom to his directors and will go to any extent for cinema,” the director said.

Vora added that Anil was very keen to make the comedy.

“Anil always wanted to make this film and Anees (Bazmee) had already written the script from Roshan Andrews’ Malayalam film (’Udayananu Tharam’). But then I made a lot of changes in the script. I wasn’t looking for any flavour, but a story and it came out well,” said Vora.

This is not the first time Anil has ventured into production. He first turned producer with “Badhaai Ho Badhaai” in 2002 and followed it up with the critically-acclaimed “Gandhi, My Father” (2007). He is also producing forthcoming movies “No Problem” and “Ayesha”.

Director Simbudevan's new venture Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam starring Raghava Lawrence and Sandhya in the lead is based on a 17th century story. Sources say its similar to a cowboy story. Sandhya comes as a typical red indian girl with a total changeover to suit her role. Going with period of the original story, Simbudevan has taken efforts to source all the requirements for the set to go in line with the age old style. So when he needed a revolver of those times, he started looking out for owners of the same from whom he could source it and duplicate it with a typical model for the movie. After frantic search, he found one with Actor Sarathkumar. Responding to his need, Sarathkumar graciously gave his revolver and Simbudevan made a model for his use and returned the same. Rakhi Sawant surely couldn’t have asked for more. A Rs.30 lakh (Rs. 3 million) necklace designed by Farah Ali Khan, a lehenga-choli wedding dress by celebrity designer Neeta Lulla, a ’swayamvar’ on national television and a grand wedding to be watched by millions across the country.

The former ‘item girl’, who has had a rags-to-riches career, will marry on NDTV Imagine’s reality show “Rakhi Ka Swayamvar” soon. She will choose her “perfect man” from among nine grooms who have come from cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Rishikesh, Jaipur and Kanpur and even from places as far off as Toronto.

National award winning designer Neeta Lulla, who is one of Aishwarya Rai’s favourite designers, and ace jewellery designer Farah Khan Ali have been roped in to help Rakhi look her best on her D-day. And the two are doing every bit they can to fulfil the bride-to-be’s wish to look like a “princess” that special day.

“Rakhi told us she wants to look like a princess that day - something like she has never looked before. I have given her a very colourful ensemble - it’s a very conservative outfit,” Lulla told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

“For her wedding day, Rakhi would be wearing a lehenga-choli in five different colours with ornate kundan work to give her an ethnic Rajasthani look,” said Lulla, who has designed Aishwarya’s clothes in movies like “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”, “Devdas” and more recently “Jodhaa Akbar”.

To complement her outfit, Rakhi will be donning traditional Indian jadau jewellery designed by Farah Ali Khan, the daughter of yesteryears actor Sanjay Khan and well-known interior designer Zarine Khan.

“The choker that Rakhi will be wearing for her wedding day is very heavy. It looks very traditional and covers almost her entire neck,” she said.

According to Khan, the choker costs approximately Rs.3 million.

However, Lulla has refused to divulge the price tag of her outfit.

The two designers are not only putting their creative instincts together for Rakhi’s wedding day but also for the sangeet and mehendi (pre-wedding) ceremonies.

For the sangeet, Rakhi decided to opt for an Indo-Western look in blue. Lulla says it is a very contemporary outfit. To match the dress, Khan has given her an elaborate diamond neck piece, which also costs around Rs.3 million.

If both the designers are to be believed, Rakhi was extremely “accomodating” to their suggestions but gave her inputs as well.

“Rakhi told me that her earrings shouldn’t be very heavy so that she can dance freely. She also said that I should design ornaments which don’t break,” said Khan.

If this wasn’t enough, model-turned-fashion co-ordinator Marc Robinson has also been roped in to groom Rakhi’s prospective grooms, who are vying to marry the former item girl through the reality show.

Rakhi’s wedding will take place as soon as she zeroes in on an eligible bachelor for herself on NDTV Imagine’s show “Rakhi Ka Swayamvar” - a move that has left a lot of people in tinsel town shocked.

Amitabh Bachchan in hospital for ‘routine checkup

Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan went to Lilavati Hospital here Wednesday morning for what was described as “a routine checkup”, though in his blog he has complained of a stomach ache.

Though the hospital authorities declined to comment, the same old stomach problem that Bachchan, 66, has been suffering from for long may have recurred.

In his blog in the morning, Bachchan has admitted to getting a tummy ache just before he embarked for Mumbai from London a day earlier.

On arrival, he drove straight to his doctor late Tuesday night and underwent an examination and a CT scan. These revealed nothing but since the trouble persisted, more tests were advised for Wednesday, he says in his blog.

Until all the test results are out and a line of treatment finalised, he has cancelled all his shooting and travel plans, he writes.

Bachchan has vented his frustration saying despite “extreme care”, the problem keeps recurring and medication and rest have been the order of the day.

The posh Suzie Harman, who dressed up Gerard Butler in Guy Ritchie’s 2008 blockbuster “RocknRolla”, will not only be doing the clothes for John but for the entire cast of the film that will be shot in London.

Though Abbas, who made the hit “Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na”, refused to divulge any details, producer Madhu Mantena confirmed that the international stylist has been roped in.

“Yes, Suzie Harman is on board. How we got her is another story. All the crew of ‘1:800 Love’ barring the cinematographer is from London,” Mantena said.

Suzie Harman, who has done the entire styling for more than a dozen top British and American films, has been shopping at London’s pricey Harrod’s store for John. And she has pulled out all stops in getting the right clothes.

“My director Abbas has no hair to tear. But I’m about to go bald worrying about the clothes budget. And it’s not just John,” Mantena added. “She’s dressing up the entire cast…all the characters including the leading lady Pakhi (Tyrewala) and, of course, John.”

Apparently the clothes budget for Abbas’ film has already shot up three times over. But the producer is not complaining.

“I trust Abbas’ judgement completely. And yes it looks like the film will be much costlier than I thought. But good things don’t come cheap.”

Filmmaker Piyush Jha insists that his “Sikandar” is not just another film set in Kashmir. He says the movie tries to present the situation in the trouble-torn Valley through the eyes of children living there.

” ‘Sikandar’ basically reflects the situation of Kashmir seen through the eyes of children. Children are the hope of the country and thus this film is very relevant at this time, especially for the younger generation,” Jha told IANS over telephone from Mumbai.

“It’s a film full of hope but told in a manner that is not preachy. It is involving and intriguing and connects at an emotional level,” said the adfilmaker-turned-director.

“Sikandar”, which will hit theatres Aug 21, is produced by Big Pictures and Sudhir Mishra and has child actors Parzan Dastur and Ayesha Kapoor playing lead characters. It also features actors like Sanjay Suri and R. Madhavan in pivotol roles.

Set in Jammu and Kashmir, the film is centred on a teenage boy, who dreams of playing football at the national level, and his friend, played by Ayesha Kapoor. But one day he finds a gun on the road and things change for him thereafter.

Though the film has children as its protagonists, the director refuses to call it a children’s film.

” ‘Sikandar’ is not a children’s film at all. It just has two important characters as children but it’s for everyone. Just like ‘Taare Zameen Par’ had a child protagonist but it appealed to people of all ages, this film too will appeal to one and all,” said Jha, who has made two satirical comedies “Chalo America” and “King Of Bollywood” earlier.

The film is shot entirely in the Valley and Jha maintains that the cast and crew faced no difficulty during the shooting schedule.

Talking about his experience he said: “Shooting the film in Kashmir was a great experience. The locals there and our local coordinators were so helpful. We got tremendous support from the people of the Valley and did not face any kind of problem. I would really like to appreciate the Kashmiri people.

And how difficult was it to get the Kashmiri flavour in the film?

“Extensive research went behind making the film as authentic as possible. I had to study the Kashmiri culture a lot and for that I travelled across the Valley and read about it at length.

“I met Kashmiris in the Valley and also outside to know things. We had to research the way they talk, they walk, basically everything,” the director explained.

The film was to release in March but was delayed mainly due to the strike in Bollywood over the revenue-sharing row between producers and multiplex owners.

“The strike was the main reason for the delay. Once the strike was over after two months, films with huge star casts were releasing. So we were looking for a right slot,” Jha said.

Anil kapoor fined Rs 35 Lakh

The Delhi High Court on Thursday allowed Bollywood actor and producer Anil Kapoor to release his film Shortkut after he agreed to pay Rs 35 lakh to another producer who claimed to have copyright over the title of the movie.

The production company, Anil Kapoor Film Co Pvt Ltd, owned by the actor agreed before Justice Reva Chetrapal to pay Rs 35 lakhs to B S Bhullar who claimed copyrights over the title Short Kut.

The movie, starring Akshay Khanna, Arshad Warsi and Amrita Rao, is scheduled to be released on Friday.

Bhullar had alleged that Kapoor had copied the title of his film after he gave script to the actor and offered him a role in his proposed movie.

The High Court had on July 7 issued notice to the film company and and sought its reply on the matter. Bhullar had alleged he had registered the title Short Kut with the Films Association in September 2005 and the Bollywood actor's production company copied it in an "illegal and unauthorised" manner.

Fardeen says, "I drove to and back from Goa in it. There's nothing sturdier than a Land Rover. I have never owned a SUV before. Like all true blue boys, I love cars! I am getting to know my car and it's like a love affair. It was also one of my dad's favourite cars. He had always wanted to own one and I had thought I would go out, pick up one for him and we would go for a drive together but I guess it wasn't meant to be..."

Last year, one of Fardeen's cars, a Mercedes 500, had got into trouble for not having the right paperwork. Fardeen says, "Once bitten twice shy. I had the Land Rover imported directly from the UK this time. All the right paperwork is in place for this one. I didn't realise how the car dealer had got the Merc but the EOW is doing its homework and investigating the matter. Hopefully, they will soon catch the people responsible for it."

"Kareena highly recommended Imtiaz when I decided to produce a film. At that time 'Jab We Met' hadn't released. So I met him... it was the script and the way he narrated it to me that really impressed me and we decided to make 'Love aaj Kal', " Saif told reporters here.

"I love the way Imtiaz works. He is amazing, " he added.

Saif was in the capital Thursday with his co-star Deepika Padukone and Ali to promote the film that is scheduled for July 31 release.

The film also stars yesteryear hit couple Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor along with Rahul Khanna and focuses on relationships in two different eras, showing that the experience of being in love remains the same.

Asked why he decided to venture into production, the 38-year-old said: "I decided to turn producer because I wanted to own the work that is done. I wanted to be more creatively involved in a project apart from just acting in it and take the responsibility. Basically, after working in the industry for so many years, I wanted growth."

So did he change in anyway after taking this step?

"Yes, I have become more conscious of small things now after becoming a producer - I became more conscious about small details during shootings like whether an artist is coming on time or not, production plans are working in close coordination with other, et al, " Saif said.

The actor, who is co-producing the film with Dinesh Vijan under their banner Illuminati Films, says it is an unconventional move and will appeal to viewers.

" 'Love Aaj Kal' will appeal to people since it has got very genuine dialogues. It has a certain newness and boldness in character. It is unconventional, yet very commercial, " he said.

James Dean and Marlon Brando
"As you're interviewing me, and this may sound spooky, but just above your shoulder is a James Dean picture framed. Now what I liked about him was that he was an awkward guy. He literally brought in a different style of acting, right from his first film East of Eden.

Back in the 50's, acting was very stylized, the dialogues were artificial and then there is one guy who does something weird. It's like seeing a maverick doing something completely out of the ordinary. That's a great feeling. He had a style of his own. If you watch Marlon Brando in The Street Car Named Desire, you'll get the same feel.

James Dean was raw. All the others were ripe. To see an actor doing that radical was surprising. To me, Dean and Brando were guys whom I watched a lot. They were men who never really combed their hair and still look charismatic. So you tend to imbibe things when you watch actors like them."

Fans
"Somehow the presence of meeting your fans or audiences in public face to face gives your film that little push. So if I go to London or New York and a local photographer takes my picture, he feels better.

You are traveling the world and then doing phone interviews don't help. I like to meet journalists and fans in person. The audience feels that I am taking trouble to come to meet them.

They feel a little more of a connect that I am reaching out to them. If I have a hand shake with a fan, I am winning that persons heart permanently. If I am rude to my fan, I will lose him permanently and I'm sure about that."

New Perspective
"A lot of the guys I hang out with are new generation of actors, like Ranbir Kapoor and Abhay Deol. I am very friendly with these guys and we tend to like the same kind of movies, talk in the same way. Same applies with my directors, like Soham Shah and Abbas Tyrewala. We have a similar thought process.

The grammar, meaning how a film is shot, how it is portrayed, how you act the scene, etc. has changed drastically. The way Soham will shoot it as a director is less theatrical. I'll give you a great example of my grandfather's film which I was watching. It's a steady cam shot. The hero is walking across with an important letter in his hand.

It slips out and falls down and the hero continues to walk. Then the light focuses on the letter and the camera zooms in and holds it for a couple of seconds. Imagine doing this today. That was the grammar in the 50's and that's the way the director used to communicate with his audience.

You had to underline the fact; the letter was important and had to be noticed. Today a crying scene need not show an actor cry. Today, the director will take a close up of my face and show my eyes moist. That's it."

Style Statement
"I am influenced quite a bit from the West as far as my styling goes. Firstly, I don't wear a lot of Indian clothes. The actual styling is done by my stylist Harmeet. He has done my styling for my new film Luck and almost all my photo shoots.

For me, suit styling has got to be always based on Oceans Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen. Brad Pitt and George Clooney wore suits as if they were carrying a jeans and a t-shirt. Skinny ties are in and you have to match up to the world and not the West.

Success
"For me, success is having the freedom to do only what you really want to do. The second you sit back and don't want to do something, you've lost your freedom. Your only motivation to do something is that you want to do it.

My success will never change because I feel that I am very successful. I sign a film because I feel that I am really excited about doing this. That's all I do.

In terms a money, there is a fair chance that I am making less money than most people in the industry. I can bet on that. But I am happy with what I am getting in return. I have got more than I have asked for, actually.

I have good house, great friends and two awesome cars - a white BMW 3 series and a brown Porsche SUV. I have plenty of money to live the kind of lifestyle that I want. I am not wanting and I can't see things getting much better than this, even though I know it can get worse."

Cars
"BMW is my type of car. I tend to like sporty cars and small cars. It's a great fun car, it's small and it's like you are go- karting while you are driving. You are seated low and driving in a BMW series, except the seven series which is huge.

The Porsche SUV I have is more for practical reasons. It's more for taking it out while I am filming. I can pack my entire luggage in there, my crew, my assistant and my boy who takes care of all the petty stuff while shooting. I say it's an all-in-one car for more reasons than just one."

Family
"My family has never let me down but there was a point in my life and career where I thought that I had let Aamir Khan down. It was during the time I was shooting Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na. I wasn't able to give as much to it as I could've.

I was cribbing about it. He told me not to crib over issues like this. Aamir made me aware of the movie business and made me see the harsh realities of how the business inside and outside functions. I know it now because I am four films old."

Star Power
"Star power does not affect my life if I'm walking down the streets of Mumbai, forget London or the U.S. But yes, I can say this because I am three films old today.

In the next two years, if there comes a point that I can't step out of my house, I'll have to do it. Like how SRK, Salman and Hrithik do because there'll be a stampede if the people see them roaming the streets of any country. I will be able to do this once I become a star power."

Beers and Ales
"I've got to say one thing about London. I love the beer man! I love the real country pubs out there. I do not eat anything till I sample one of each pint of London Pride, Fullers, etc, the real British beers. I hate Stella Artois though.

I am celebrating right now in Mumbai. Am dancing around because for the first time Ale is made available in India. I'd love to open a place like that in Mumbai. I mean, I'd live there."

Let's talk about ShortKut
It's a movie about two people who want to achieve their goals in life, with the film industry as a back drop. It's all about people and their choices, narrated in a funny way.

So have you taken any ShortKut for success?
Well I did not take any short cut in my life as such..... it just happened. There are people who think that the biggest short cut you can ever take is being an actor's son if you want to be an actor. I was born in a filmy family, which helped me to overcome hurdles to become an actor. Or else, we see these girls and guys coming to Mumbai from far away places to become actors, directors, scriptwriters and many of them face disappointments. Getting into the industry is a very-very difficult thing. So I respect having this advantage. Apart from this, at Malabar Hill, there's this road called Seedi (Stairs) Road which I used to take as a shortcut to school, whenever I used to be late and miss the bus.

This is the first time you've worked with Amrita Rao....
Amrita is a very easy person to work with. She is a very simple girl in her personal life and she brings that simplicity to her work as well. There is certain innocence about her; which comes on screen as well. She has never done sexy or glamorous roles and I think she has enjoyed transforming herself into something which she had never done before.

Were you insecure about acting with Arshad, known for his comic timing?
Arshad is a fantastic actor. Especially in these kinds of comedy films. I think his best work has been Munnabhai films. I think his work in Short Kut is as good if not better than his work as Circuit.

You haven't worked with Priyadarshan in a while.
I am starting a film with him, towards the end of September- October. It also stars Ajay Devgan, and it's not a comedy. Priyan has not made a serious movie since Virasat. It'll be fun, interesting and something different.

After Tara Sharma, you haven't been involved with someone else...
How do you know? There is a person in my life but I would not like to talk about it.

Any interest in getting politics, like your dad?
Not at all. I have the same interest as most normal citizens have for their country or politics. I follow the newspapers; and whatever is happening in the country. But I am not interested in being a part of politics.

Any plans to produce films in the Future?
No, not right now. Now, I am concentrating on my acting. May be in the future I would like to.

Kumar’s latest film ‘Kambakkhat Ishq’, where he plays a Hollywood stunt also features ‘Superman’ star Brandon Routh and Denise Richards.

Have you finished unwrapping your birthday (June 8) gifts yet? Which is best one of all?
The best gift was that dad flew into Mumbai from Los Angeles for four days and then we went together to Macau.

His visit was supposed to be a surprise but in all her excitement, my manager Nisha just let it slip out. But that was very sweet of him. I got some 500 books and the most delicious home-baked carrot cake from Monika, my publicist.

At 24, how would you sum up your personality?
I was born and brought up in the film industry. I have seen dad go through a lot - I had the ringside view of his struggle and stardom. He was never aware of his super-stardom, work has been worship for him. That experience, together with my mom and sis Rhea, keeps me well-grounded. I certainly don't have any false sense of self importance.

I am very hard-working. I am like the pit bull - I never give up on anything. Like I get claustrophobic in lifts but I made sure I rode up and down in the elevator from the 38th floor hotel room in Macau recently with a brave face. I am scared of going underwater, so I will take to deep-sea diving.

The easiest perhaps is facing the camera? Your recent photo spreads have been scintillating.
Facing the camera for films surely comes easy to me because that is such a great escape. You are playing someone else! But I hate still camera. I overcame that apprehension working with Mr Bhansali when we had hundreds of photoshoots. I also don't look at myself in the mirror, I get self-critical and self-conscious.

We heard that you will be soon busying yourself in a workshop with your co-stars in Ayesha.
Ayesha is not a pure love story, it is about six or seven friends played by Ira Dubey, Amita , Lisa, Cyrus Sahukar, Arunoday Singh and Abhay Deol.

Since the film spans over 63 days, we all have to really be friends before the film goes on floors. So if we have to work together for nearly four months we should have mutual trust too. Now that Abhay is back from New York, we can hold the workshops.

How is it working for the first time with a lady director, Rajshri Ojha?
Oh, we keep discussing back stories for every character in Ayesha. I can be annoying with all my questions to the director. I used to badger Mr Bhansali and Mr Mehra too.

So Rajshri is no exception - at times she asks me when I will stop asking questions! (laughs) As for women directors , I think they make films most beautifully. I am a big Mira Nair fan because she uses space with her actors so effectively.

What's Ayesha like? Do you identify with her?
Ayesha is the Indianised version of Jane Austen's character, as you know already. Ayesha is a motherless girl who has taken care of the family. She wants to be in control - she likes everything to be perfect. She's smart and perceptive. But she challenges everybody which makes her self-destructive in a way.

How and why did Abhay Deol come into the picture?
Abhay is a brilliant actor. He can be fun and he has the confidence to carry off this role. He is a very secure actor, he knows who he is. He suits the role of Knightley aka Arjun who is a very sorted-out guy and he is at ease with Ayesha as a woman of substance.

So is Ayesha anti-marriage? What's your view about the institution of matrimony?
Ayesha definitely feels that marriage is not a merger. I am a romantic, so I too feel marriages cannot be arranged, but since I also know that my parents love me so selflessly, I will be smart about bringing home someone whom I love and of whom they approve. I will have to do a balancing act.

You are a Jane Austen fan. What do you admire about her heroines?
All her protagonists are independent, self respecting women. They read, write and play music. They have a definite sense of self-entitlement. And I am quite a feminist, so I love her work and most of my favourite authors are women writers like Sylvia Plath.

Are you doing Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Sahibaan?
Mehra speaks to me about so many films, Sahibaan is one of them. Let us see which one of these works out. But I want to with him for sure. He is extremely realistic - a good man and a great filmmaker. I want to play characters of conflict - like the ones in his films.

You have been signed up by Dharma Productions for I Hate Love Stories opposite Imran Khan. So are you prepared to get away from the traditional mould and don a bikini if "the role demands"?
Punit Malhotra is the young, earnest director of the film. It's a young man's sweet romantic take. This will be a lovely film for Imran and me. It is a love story, a date flick.

As for wearing a bikini - well I wear it in real life and I have worn angarkhas, salwar-kameez, bandana, jeans, skirts, gunjee - whatever it takes. If the character I play is on the beach - the correct gear would have to be a bikini. (squeals away naughtily).

What kind of roles are you being offered these days?
Oh absolutely anything - my sister is going through umpteen scripts offered to me. It is flattering that most of these are strong women roles.

Having been an assistant director, when will the director in you surface?
At present, I am still evolving as an actor. But the writer in me is wanting to surface. I don't know if I can be a good director because I am not so good at dealing with people. I would rather write screenplays.

Islam is a religion of peace not a terrorism: Imran Khan

Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan has said that terrorism should not be linked with Islam.

Talking to media persons after visiting Jamia Naeemia to express grief over the assassination of country’s top religious scholar Sarfaraz Naeemi here, Khan termed the suicide bombings as a ‘political issue.’

“No religion can allow suicide bombing. There is no solution to this problem in Islam. The suicide bombing is an entirely political issue,” The Daily Times quoted Khan, as saying.

He criticized the PPP-led government for towing the lines of the United States, and said that the extremism in Pakistan could not be rooted out until the US continues its operation in Afghanistan.

“Pakistan is heading towards disaster as the ruling political leadership is in pursuit of dollars for their personal gains.The growing extremism in Pakistan cannot be curbed as long as US stays in Afghanistan,” the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief said.

Khan said he is sure that mid-term polls will be held in the country, but added that even the polls would not be able to pull Pakistan out from the current turbulent situation. (ANI)

If the original cast of "Short Kut - The Con Is On" would have remained intact, audiences would have seen Anil Kapoor playing the role that Akshaye Khanna now essays. Also, Arshad was a late entry into the project as he finally got the part written for Akshaye.

"Yes, the film did see some casting changes though all of it happened before it went on floors. Akshaye was always the first choice for the film and he was on board immediately. After 'Gandhi My Father', it was but natural that he acts in my next production as well," Anil said.

But due to a couple of reasons Anil had to opt out of the project and stay on primarily as a producer.

"Originally I was supposed to do Akshaye's role and he was to do Arshad's role. It was around the same time that Subhash Ghai asked me to do 'Black & White'. I had no reason to say no since I have very high regard for him. We have worked in some wonderful movies together ('Ram Lakhan,' 'Karma', 'Taal') and with 'Black & White' we would have come together after a long time," the versatile actor said.

Around the same time, Anil's dates were also clashing with Yash Raj Films' "Tashan".

"Subhash-ji certainly wanted me in his project and requested me if I could postpone 'Short Kut' for a while. Since I couldn't do that as we were ready to kick-start our project, I proposed to move out of my own project. This is when I requested Akshaye to step into the role written for me," he said.

Considering the fact that Akshaye had made up his mind to play the role of a lovable brat, wasn't it difficult for him to have a re-look at the film with a different perspective?

"See, Akshaye is such a versatile actor that he could do well in both the roles. He has a sensitive side to him, something that I realised when I worked with him in 'Taal'. I had complete confidence that he would be convincing in the other role too," Anil said.

Roping in Arshad wasn't difficult at all. "He consented to the film immediately..."

Incidentally, Paresh Rawal too was approached for playing one of the important roles in "Short kut".

"We would have loved to see him as a part of our film. We approached him for the role of an acting guru-cum-secretary, which is now being played by Chunky Pandey. But Paresh was bowled over by Arshad's part and wanted to do his role," Anil revealed.

"He was keen to play the role of a bad actor who achieves superstardom. Nevertheless, I'm extremely happy with the way the final casting has worked out for my film. I'm now quite positive that audiences too would find the film as funny and entertaining as we all do."

Directed by Neeraj Vora, "Short Kut" boasts of a special appearance by both Anil and Sanjay Dutt along with leading lady Amrita Rao in a dance number "Mareez-e-mohabbat". The film is all set for a July 10 release.

Rubbishing rumours that Bollywood star Aamir Khan will be seen in his next film, writer-turned-director Neeraj Vora has said that he hasn't even met the actor yet.

"I have'nt even met Aamir yet. Neither have I narrated anything to him. These are all media reports. I'm still writing the film and the whole process is still outstanding," Vora told.

"We (both Aamir and himself) are very clinical about what we do and it is only the script of the film that will decide it's fate (whether Aamir will star in it or not)," he added.

The news came after a leading daily claimed that Aamir has agreed to be a part of Vora's yet untitled romantic comedy and would also produce it.

It’s been heard that the show is soon coming to its end. “The show will be ending in the last week of August. It was decided that Dus Ka Dum will have 14 episodes. Though this time the show was only celebrity special as there were no general people seen, ” adds the source.

The last episode of DKD will see Sanjay Dutt and Jackie Shroff. “The shooting for last episode is also over and it was a touchy moment for the second season of DKD. Alongside the viewers will also see Sohail and Arbaaz Khan with Salman sharing the one screen on the show, ” concludes the source.

As per Sallu’s contract, there will be third season grooving next year. So let’s wait and wait of what will be the new flavour of the next innings.

Celebrities from all verticals gathered at The Park, Chennai this evening to announce the Joy of Giving Week, planned to be held from September 27 - October 3, 2009, organized by GiveIndia, India’s largest philanthropic platform. The Joy of Giving Week is devised as an ambitious social movement that aims to engage two crore Indians spanning companies, schools, colleges, celebrities and the general public.

Speaking at the event, Suriya announced that he would allocate 10% of his salary for such philanthropic activities. He also revealed that he is being chided by Gnanavel, who heads the Agaram Foundation run by his family, for not visiting the foundation to oversee its activities. “I promise that I will spend at least a day every month from now on with the Foundation,” Suriya asserted. Shriya, who also addressed the gathering, wished that such efforts are supported by public in a large scale.

Anil Kapoor advises Amrita Rao to shed her girl-next-door image

Whatever apprehensions Amrita Rao had for her skinfest in her next flick Shortkut were put to rest by producer Anil Kapoor. He convinced her to give it a shot to shed her simple girl-next-door screen image.

"I went solely by his judgement," says the actress. "He has been around for a long, long time and knows what is right. Initially, I was a bit sceptical as it was something that I had not done before. But he told me to go for it and trust him. And I am glad I took his advice."

Huge change

Says Amrita, "It is not that there was a definite gameplan to go for a bold, new look. If the film had come two years ago, I would have still done it. But after Vivaah and Welcome To Sajjanpur, it is a huge change for me."
As the actress does not have a weight problem, getting into the bra tops and hot pants was no big deal. "I have always eaten in control and sensibly. I also do yoga regularly. That is all I had to do to get into ship-shape for the film."

Didnt expect it

Her family has yet to view the film "but as my mother accompanies me for shoots, she has seen me on the sets. And after the promos, they didn't expect that I could look like this too!"

This is also the first time that Manish Malhotra has worked his designs on Amrita. "I never had an opportunity to wear his creations on the screen. When I had my fittings and saw myself in the mirror, it was like 'okay, that's me! We shared a great comfort level and that's there to see in his creations."

It is learnt that each time she appeared on the sets, the unit went gung-ho and co-star Arsahd Warsi started calling her Amrita Wow instead of Rao and then the entire unit had Ms Wow as her nick."

Salman acknowledges SRK for first time since their spat

A pro-SRK statement on Salman's show? Believe it. Recently Riteish Deshmukh was on 10 Ka Dum, and for the first time after the Salman-Shah Rukh fight the host actually acknowledged the other Khan on his show. Riteish stopped after winning Rs 10 lakh and gave away the money to Salman's Being Human foundation.

When Sallu asked Riteish who his favourite actor was, the former said SRK. The host, without blinking an eye, agreed about SRK being a good actor.

Too much fun

Says Ritiesh, "Govinda, David Dhawan and I went together on the sets of 10KD and we have never had so much fun! We got along so well that we forgot there were cameras around."

He confirms that when Salman asked him about his favourite actor, he mentioned SRK, "I didn't get any negative vibes about Shah Rukh from Salman on the show. He was very cool and dignified and didn't pass any snide remarks about him. In fact, Salman spoke highly about SRK and his work."

Riteish, who had gone to promote his next release Do Knot Disturb, says despite being so close to Shah Rukh, Salman and he share a cordial and warm relationship. "He pulls my leg whenever we meet. I imitated Salman too on the show. I looked at him the way he does with the contestants and said in his voice, 'Salman, mere saath nahi khela toh kya khelaâ¦!' He took it in the right spirit."

Hema Malini and daughters to move back to Juhu from Goregaon

Hema Malini and her daughters Esha and Ahana Deol will shift back to their Juhu home from Goregaon by this month-end.

It is learnt that they are only waiting for the occupancy papers. Hema and her daughters moved into their Goregaon bungalow in 2006.

After the 26/7 floods, the family faced a lot of problems with water-logging during monsoons. Now the elevation has been done and a little patchwork of the interiors is remaining.

Although the three loved the quiet atmosphere at Goregaon, the family is now excited to move back to their original place of residence.

Hema says, "The house is finally done, but we are yet to move in completely. We are waiting for the permission papers and we will soon occupy it."

She continues, "Esha and Ahana have done up the house, as per their tastes. We will soon be moving in.
